Chainmail / Chain Mail / Chainmaille / Chain Maille? - This popular technique has so many spellings it will make you dizzy. As far as I aware there is no official spelling. Many designers opt for "chain mail" because it's easy to remember and easy to search for online. Others, like me, think that "chain maille" delineates it from "chain letters". Sheets of chain are referred to as "maille", and so chain maille seems more consistent. So, why two words instead of one? Purely habit. I started spelling it as "chain maille" one day and never thought to switch. Read more about the history of chain maille here.
